Abbot Kinney in Venice, California has quickly become one of the coolest blocks in America. With shops like A. Kinney Court it's easy to understand why. Walking the street I was quickly drawn to the beautiful eyeglass frames in the window. Naively not knowing later that day I would be playing doubles paddle tennis with the owner and namesake, Garrett Leight. The son of Oliver Peoples' founder Larry Leight, Garrett is a bit of a kindred spirit having a very similar upbringing as me.
What I've learned is the things we tend to like, we also tend to like the people that make them. Garrett Leight California Optical is no exception. With some of the most interesting modern shades, designed with a classic frame of mind, it's hard to pick just one style. I went with a custom matte leopard tortoise in the Brooks (pictured above). And my lady friend went with a custom matte honey blonde tortoise in the Kinney. Both styles look great on a man or a woman and all are named after local streets. The shop is also stocked with Oliver Peoples, our friends Silver Lining Opticians and shoes from our buddy Mark McNairy (who will soon have three of his own collaborative eyeglass models). We ended the day at one of my favorite restaurants, Gjelina, which is another Abbot Kinney hot spot. Garrett thanks for everything and you'll get your rematch very soon!
